About the neighbourhood around the Pod Hotel New York:

Pod Hotel New York is in an awesome location! Midtown East begins at Fifth Avenue and works east toward the water, encompassing the residential (and reviving) Murray Hill along the way. More business-oriented than Midtown West, Midtown East is home to many of New York’s biggest and best law firms, investment firms, publishing houses, and advertising agencies, which fill up the many skyscrapers linking the avenues.

Still, there are plenty of noteworthy tourist sights in Midtown East, including Grand Central Terminal, the United Nations headquarters, Trump Tower, the Chrysler Building, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Midtown East is also somewhat of a shopping haven. The flagship Saks Fifth Avenue store is located here, as are Takashimaya, Chanel, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Niketown … Basically, if it isn’t in Midtown East, then it’s a few blocks north in the Upper East Side.

Not known for its nightlife, Midtown East is, at least, not dead after dark. Remember all those skyscrapers? Well their occupants begin to fill up Midtown East’s bars, pubs, and steakhouses after office hours, keeping the neighborhood somewhat lively with suits, slacks, and skirts letting off steam. This neighborhood also offers easy access to Central Park and the many museums of the Upper East Side.

Popular Reviews of the Pod Hotel New York:

The three-star Pod Hotel is an appealing hotel concept: Imagine a very well-designed (if spartan) hotel in a lively and action-packed corner of a big city. Now add to the equation a nightly rate that’s surprisingly pocketbook-friendly.

Rooms at the Pod, nearly 350 in all, are attractively spunky, with accents of blond wood and metallic, almost institutional-looking bedside lamps and sinks. The “townhouse suites,” which are a particularly good value for families and small groups, even have beanbags for a frisson of retro chic. All pods are equipped with individual climate control, LCD TVs, mp3 docks and free Wi-Fi. Tiny bathrooms sport lovely black and white tiles.

There has to be a catch, and, in fact, there is. Rooms are very small, even by New York City’s miniscule standards. If you need copious amounts of space for your morning exercise routines, then perhaps your Pod Hotel room won’t be the best place to get sweaty.

Of course, there are plenty of hotels in New York with tiny rooms. It’s just that the vast majority of these hotels haven’t gone out of their way to market their scale as part and parcel of their charm. The Pod Hotel does so, and beautifully, producing a level of chic that countless cookie-cutter chain hotels with their $400 nightly rates seem to be unable to touch. Even shared bathrooms are made better by in-room displays that indicate which are available.

The rooms, the lobby and the garden café (the final of these only open during the warmer months) slyly prove that the boutique hotel approach can be extended successfully to budget-friendly spaces. The Midtown East location may be a bit staid in the evening, but it’s vitally central.

Our feature in the Telegraph UK:

With Pop Art murals in the lobby/lounge and iPod docking stations in bedrooms, The Pod is aimed at those on a tight budget looking for a bit of style. Formerly the Pickwick Arms, the hotel opened last year with a completely new look. Bedrooms and bathrooms are designed to maximise their limited space, and function well – expect dimmer lights, storage drawers under beds and rainforest showers. The £103 rate is for a bunk-bedded room with a shared bathroom.

En-suite rooms cost considerably more: in late April, £144 for “Double Pod Rooms”, which have very narrow beds, and £174 for “Queen Pod Rooms”. The hotel is in a good, low-key Midtown location, with several appealing cafés on the same block; the Pod’s courtyard café is due to open this spring, and a rooftop bar by the summer.
